What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture, a traditional Chinese medicine practice that has been in existence for around 2,500 years, can effectively address a variety of health issues, including pain, stress, allergies, insomnia, nausea, menopause and hot flashes, pregnancy discomforts, sports injuries, migraines, arthritis, infertility, and other conditions.

The underlying concept of acupuncture is based on the idea that a disturbance or blockage in the body's life energy, known as qi (pronounced "chee"), can lead to health problems. Dr. Rhode inserts thin steel needles into the patient's skin at multiple acupoints to rebalance the body's energy and trigger the release of natural chemicals that combat the illness or symptom.

Is Acupuncture Painful?

During acupuncture, you may experience a slight sting, pinch, ache, or pain as the needle is inserted into your body. Some acupuncturists may move the needle, which can increase pressure and cause discomfort. However, most people find acupuncture less painful than getting a vaccine or having blood drawn. This is because acupuncture needles are much thinner than medical needles and are solid, not hollow. Additionally, these needles have round edges that prevent them from cutting through the skin. Once the needle is correctly placed, you may feel a tingling or heavy sensation. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates acupuncture needles.

What Should I Expect During an Acupuncture Session?

During the initial appointment, Dr. Rhode will discuss your health history and symptoms with you and conduct an examination to identify areas of the body that will benefit from acupuncture. This information will allow Dr. Rhode to select suitable points in the body to insert sterile, disposable acupuncture needles. The needles are as thin as a human hair and are inserted at varying depths, from a fraction of an inch to a couple of inches.

An acupuncture session typically lasts between 30 minutes to an hour, with the needles remaining inserted for approximately 20 minutes. Most people find the experience relaxing and pleasurable, and may feel sensations such as warmth or mild discomfort.

To ensure a calming and effective treatment, it is recommended to avoid scheduling acupuncture appointments during a stressful or strenuous day. Additionally, it is advisable to avoid consuming coffee or alcohol prior to the appointment, as these substances can impact the effectiveness of the treatment. Eating a light meal at least two hours before the session is also recommended to avoid discomfort or dizziness. Finally, it is best to wear loose and comfortable clothing to allow for the flow of energy or "qi" through the body.

How often should I get treatments?

The number of acupuncture treatments required varies depending on the severity of your condition and your body's response to treatment. Most patients have weekly appointments, while others may require treatment more or less frequently depending on how long the effects last.

Your acupuncturist will recommend a schedule that is best suited to your individual needs. It is important to note that you may not experience the full benefits of acupuncture after just one or two treatments. If you decide to try acupuncture, it is recommended to receive at least five treatments before assessing its effectiveness.
